Our 5.0 Bloom Women and Functional Lifestyle Women's Empowerment Series s was another success!
This time around, our Topic was: Lifestyle Diseases including PCOS, Fibroids, Diabetes and Hypertension and management strategies for these conditions in African, Asian Communities.
What an enlightening session we had with Dr. Kehinde - Our Guest Speaker- a seasoned medical doctor with over 20 years of experience in the UK. 100% of all of you who attended reported that it was highly informative and I could not agree more! Dr Kehinde helped us debunk several myths surrounding PCOS and fibroids, and provided refreshing insights into diabetes and hypertension, particularly within Black and Asian communities.
Key Takeaways:
• PCOS: Dr. Kehinde clarified that PCOS is not solely a lifestyle condition. Its pathology and etiology involve a combination of genetic and hormonal factors.
• Fibroids: She emphasized that surgeries like myomectomies may not always be the definitive solution for managing fibroids.
• Lifestyle Diseases: We learned that migrating to more affluent countries, such as the UK, can increase the risk of lifestyle diseases like diabetes, often with earlier onset and more pronounced symptoms. This is due to various factors, including dietary changes and reduced physical activity.
• Diet and Exercise: The importance of monitoring both the quality and quantity of our food intake was highlighted. The human body tends to store unused energy, underscoring the need for regular physical activity.
• Routine Health Checks: Dr. Kehinde encouraged us to utilize NHS services for regular health screenings, including cervical screening and other preventive tests.

• Sub-fertility vs. Infertility: A particularly empowering takeaway was Dr. Kehinde’s emphasis on using the term “sub-fertility” instead of “infertility” when discussing PCOS. This terminology is more empathetic and realistic, acknowledging that many women with PCOS can and do conceive, sometimes with additional support.
